Last Monday morning, Kiiminki resident Veli Soronen had an unexpected visitor. “I was watching television when I noticed something moving in the woods beyond the yard. I got up to take a look and it turned out to be a wolf!”
Soronen sighted the wolf around 7:30 in Kolamäki, which is just half a kilometer from the village of Kiiminki. Soronen says the wolf came within 80 meters of his house.
The sighting was also confirmed by an expert.
A carnivore researcher visited the site and confirmed that the tracks and other distinguishing marks were indeed those of a wolf. Soronen described the wolf as being a bit larger than a German shepherd.
The Oulu Police Department confirmed that Monday morning it received four separate reports of wolf sightings in Kiiminki. At this point, the police have decided that the wolf will not be terminated. If new sightings are reported, they will be forced to reassess the situation.
