The demolition work which began two weeks ago to make way for the new community center in Kastelli is on the home stretch. Site foreman Matti Simi estimates that the demolition will be complete by mid-June.
“The kindergarten and grocery store will be demolished later. They’ll be taken down a couple of years from now, just before construction of the new school is complete,” Simi states.
The kindergarten will remain in operation until the end of the month, and the grocery store will keep serving its shoppers until the end of next year.
After the demolition is complete, Lemminkäinen Oyj will take over the site and begin construction work. The construction project will begin with pile driving, advancing on to laying concrete later in the summer. Simi estimates that the public should be able to see buildings starting to rise at the site by August.
According to Simi, the construction work has advanced on schedule. The Kastelli Community Center should be complete by August 2014. Altogether its construction will cost 43 million euros.
The Community Center project began three years ago when the Oulu City Council approved plans to build a large school complex. The community center will eventually house a kindergarten, a youth center and a library as well as Kastelli Comprehensive School, the resulting merger of Kastelli and Karjasilta upper secondary schools.
According to the building plans, the site is zoned to allow for additional residential buildings. The new building plan would enable the construction of as many as six 12-story apartment buildings.
The community center and new apartment buildings will also require more parking space, which will eventually be located at the crossroads of Sairaalanrinteentie and Oulunsuuntie. Oulu-based Medikiinteistöt has been contracted to construct nearly 600 new parking spaces in the area.
In addition to the construction of the complex, the building contract includes a stipulation on the lifecycle of the center, which means that the construction company will also be responsible for long-term upkeep and maintenance services. According to the City of Oulu, the total budget for the Kastelli construction project is 106 million euros.
